Henri Matisse itinerary (1869 -1954)
1917 : For Matisse, the Côte d'Azur was a real revelation: "When I realised that every morning I would again see this magnificent light, I couldn't beleive my luck".
40 years of luminous complicity then began between Matisse and the region.
Matisse's light has illuminated almost a century of painting and is still vibrantly reflected today in the work of contemporary artists.

• Henri Matisse on his arrival, stays at the "Hotel Beau Rivage" which faces the sea. After a short stay on Mont-Boron just above Nice and at the "Hôtel de la Méditerranée", he rents an apartment, 1 Place Charles félix, on the Cours Saleya. This beautiful neighbourhood, where he lives from 1921 to 1938, has a great influence on him and his work.
• The visit the chapelle du Rosaire in Vence, also known as the Matisse Chapel. The painter designed everything in this Chapel in 1947 - 1951 : the wrought-iron belfry, the stained-glass windows, wall decoration, the altar of light-coloured stone, chandeliers, wood-panelling, vestments ....

• Visit the Matisse Museum and its park, the garden of Arènes de Cimiez, not far away the hôtel Régina where lived Henri Matisse. This museum contains the artist's personal collection including the most famous canvasses, virtually all of his sculptures, drawings, gouache cut-outs and engravings. The Museum is housed in a 17th-C Genoese villa in the park known as the Arènes de Cimiez.
