Between 340 and 3 143 m above sea level, 80 % of the "Alpes-Maritimes" territory is mountainous. The Mediterranean sea is at less than 40 km from the highest summits. 4 000 km of footpaths and hiking paths, 65 mountain-bike itineraries, 30 venues for rock-climbing and via ferrata, 325 km of practicable rivers, 200 sites for potholing and 70 canyons ... to experience all nature's sensations.
Forest land occupies 175 000 hectares between 0 and 2 500 m in altitude. The "Alpes d'Azur" include 1 200 km ofwaterways, a hundred mountain lakes, 2 000 species of plant - 200 of which are rare - and 40 endemic species on 4 levels of vegetation.
The Parc National du Mercantour is one of 7 national parks in France, but the only one in a mountain area. It covers 68 500 hectares of protected land : rock faces, valleys and glacial amphitheatres scattered with deep blue or intense green lakes, vast mountain pasture lands, dense forests, narrow valleys, picturesque gorges and clear water torrents. Six hoofed animals cohabitate here : chamois, ibex, wild sheep, deer, roe-deer and wild boar. The wolf has made a natural come back in the region. It is protected by international law. The diversity of the environment favours the presence of other smaller mammals ... There are also numerous bird species : tétras-lyres, lagopus, rock partridge ... Without mentioning the birds of prey in majestic flight ...
The "Vallées des Merveilles et de Fontanalbe", jewel of the Mercantour National Park, feature in an open air setting a collection of more than 36 000 cave paintings dating back to the bronze and Copper ages. This protected site is one of the most important in the world, giving you the opportunity to go back some 3 500 years in time. Access on foot or by 4WD vehicles approved by the National Park. Guided visits from 1st June to 30th September.
